Introduction

The Brooklin Horticultural Society was established in 1921 and is one of 12 clubs in District 17 of the Ontario Horticultural Association. The education of our membership through informative guest speakers and the beautification of our local community are among our objects.

Purpose

The object of the society is to encourage interest and improvement in horticulture:

  1. by holding meetings for instructions and discussion on subjects connected with the theory and practice of horticulture.
  2. by encouraging the improvement of home and public grounds by planting of trees, shrubs and flowers and by otherwise promoting outdoor art and public beautification.
  3. by holding exhibitions and awarding premiums for the production of vegetables, plants, flowers, fruits, trees and shrubs.
  4. by the distribution of seeds, plants, bulbs, flowers, trees and shrubs in ways calculated to create interest in horticulture.
  5. by promoting horticultural books and periodicals.

Area Represented

Brooklin is one of over 270 societies which make up the Ontario Horticultural Association. The O.H.A. is closely affiliated with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food & Rural Affairs who give assistance to the societies in the form of grants based on groups' local beautification and educational expenditures the previous year. Our society is a member within O.H.A. District 17. The Brooklin Society represents, not only Brooklin, but all of the Town of Whitby and surrounding areas.
