At our newly-adopted park on Carnwith Drive West at Montgomery, we have started to plant bulbs and perennials to complement the shrubs and plants installed by the Town’s contractors. We need assistance with planning and planting, as well as weeding and grooming during the growing season.
At the Butterfly Meadow located at the entrance to the Wilderness Trail behind and to the west of the Vipond Arena, we plant wild flowers and native plants. In the spring, we do a small amount of grooming around the younger plants along with general grooming throughout the growing season. If it’s a particularly dry summer, we water the more sensitive plants. We also provide plant identification and information about our Society to visitors at the Meadow.
The Civic Beautification Committee selects and orders plants during the winter months. Plants are potted and groomed in the greenhouse until they can be planted outdoors in flower beds around Brooklin. Hanging baskets and tubs are also grown for placement in Brooklin and Whitby.
Garden Visits are always enjoyable. This gives you the opportunity to share your garden and your experiences with fellow members. Your name and number will be given only to our Members and they will call you to arrange a visit. Please tell us your favourite garden highlight and we’ll add that to our list.
Every year the Brooklin Spring Fair gives us the opportunity to enter a Float in the parade. This is a great opportunity to get the whole family involved in an outstanding Brooklin tradition.
BHS has opportunities to staff information booths at shows and events for the purpose of promoting membership in our society and/or providing horticultural information. Sometimes, we sell items at these events such as raffle tickets, BHS golf shirts or special garden bulbs.
This is where you can put your writing and computer talents to use. Articles for the Newsletter are always welcome. Periodically, we require someone to record and transcribe general meeting minutes. Those with publishing talents can help with the production of monthly Current Events sheets and publicity materials. Extra hands are always welcome for membership mailings.
Helping out at one or more meetings give you an inside look at how a flower show is run and what judges are looking for when judging. Comments from the judge and show committee members are very informative and a fun way for an exhibitor to pick up some helpful tips.
The sunflower is our club's official flower. The specimen pictured at right was a prize-winner at one of our shows in 2005.
